5 Values to apply when learning the clarinet .

As a clarinetist, I,ve had the privilege of experiencing a level of dedication to my instrument that has over time prompted me to ask, what purpose beyond making music does learning this instrument serve for me?

This has led me to come to understand one thing. No matter what you do in your life, everything is just a means to experience and learn the same lessons, each through a different medium. My medium just happens to be the clarinet.

What lessons do I learn you ask?

Well I think I could write a book on that. In fact I think that one day I might. But for now, here are the five most important lessons I continue to develop and learn through the medium of music.

1-You need to learn how to apply relentless effort.

This is the ability to practice thoroughly and regularly, even when you’re low on drive and motivation.

2-You need to find your self-sufficiency in every situation.

Looking at what others are doing and comparing how you’re not where they are is a shure way to discourage yourself out of applying the effort you need.

3-You need to consistently stay present.

Not worrying about the past or what the future holds allows you room and energy to focus on the current task at hand and put more intention behind it.

4-You must stay relentlessly positive.

No matter what the situation you must always choose to look towards the future and keep moving in a forward direction, a direction which

5-In the face of discomfort you must lean towards it in order to grow.

Discomfort is vital as a human being, we need discomfort in order to grow. Therefore when faced with a situation of discomfort we mustn’t  shy away from it, we must lean towards it in order to learn and grow and improve.

I approach learning the clarinet, and teaching the clarinet, with these five values in mind. Striving to embody these values in the clarinet helps me approach the rest of my life through these values.
